DPF problems — prevention and fixes

DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) issues are one of the most common and expensive problems for modern diesel van owners. Here's what you need to know:

What causes DPF problems?

  • Lots of short journeys (the DPF can't regenerate)
  • Low-quality fuel
  • Faulty EGR valve
  • Using wrong engine oil specification
  • Ignoring warning lights

Prevention tips:

  1. Drive at motorway speeds for 20+ minutes at least once a week
  2. Use the correct low-ash engine oil (check your manual)
  3. Don't ignore the DPF warning light — drive at 2,000+ RPM in a lower gear
  4. Use quality fuel — premium diesel can help
  5. Keep on top of general servicing

When it's blocked:

  • Forced regeneration by a garage (£100-200)
  • Chemical cleaning (£200-400)
  • Professional DPF cleaning service (£300-500)
  • Replacement (£800-2,000+ depending on van)

⚠️ Important: Removing the DPF is illegal for road use in the UK and will result in an MOT failure.

Has anyone dealt with DPF issues? What worked for you?
