Choosing the Right Van Size
SWB, MWB, LWB, H1, H2 — confused? This guide explains van sizes and helps you pick the right one for your job.
Step-by-step guide
- 1
Understand van size terminology
SWB = Short Wheelbase, MWB = Medium Wheelbase, LWB = Long Wheelbase, XLWB = Extra Long Wheelbase. H1 = Low Roof, H2 = Medium Roof, H3 = High Roof. These combine to describe the van's load space dimensions.
- 2
Measure your typical load
Measure the longest, widest and tallest items you regularly carry. Add 10–15% headroom for manoeuvring. This tells you the minimum load space dimensions you need.
- 3
Consider where you'll drive and park
LWB high-roof vans are harder to park in multi-storeys and tight city streets. If you work mainly in urban areas, a compact or SWB van may be more practical despite the smaller load space.
- 4
Check payload capacity
Payload is the maximum weight you can carry (gross vehicle weight minus the van's kerb weight). A larger van doesn't always mean more payload — some LWB models are heavier, leaving less capacity for cargo.
- 5
Match the van to your trade
Plumbers and electricians usually need SWB/MWB low-roof vans with good racking options. Couriers need LWB high-roof for volume. Builders need dropside or tipper options. Removals firms need Luton bodies.
