  7. 7. Read the small print
  1. Understand hire purchase (HP)

HP lets you spread the cost over 1–5 years. You pay a deposit then fixed monthly payments. You own the van outright once the final payment is made. Good for those who want to keep the van long-term.

  2. Consider personal contract purchase (PCP)

PCP offers lower monthly payments than HP because you defer a large 'balloon' payment to the end. At the end you can pay the balloon, hand the van back, or trade in. Less common for vans but available on newer models.

  3. Look at finance lease

With a finance lease, a finance company buys the van and you rent it for an agreed term. You never own it but monthly payments may be tax-deductible for businesses. Popular with fleet operators.

  4. Compare operating lease (contract hire)

Contract hire bundles the van, servicing and maintenance into one monthly payment. Ideal for businesses that want predictable costs and replace vehicles every 3–4 years.

  5. Check your credit score

Lenders use your credit score to set interest rates. Check your score for free with Experian, Equifax or TransUnion before applying. A higher score means lower APR.

  6. Compare APR not just monthly payments

A longer term reduces monthly payments but increases total interest. Always compare the APR and total amount payable across different offers.

  7. Read the small print

Check for early settlement fees, mileage limits (on PCP and lease), and what happens if you miss a payment. Ensure gap insurance is included or available.
