Medium Van Buyer's Guide: Vivaro, Trafic, Expert & More
The medium (one-tonne-ish) van class is the busy middle of the market: bigger than a car-derived small van, easier to park than a full-size Transit. It's also the most badge-engineered class in the UK, several of the best-sellers are the same van wearing different badges. This guide explains which is which, and how to buy a good one.

The two families (this is the key to the class)
1. Stellantis EMP2 family (2016 onward): the current Vauxhall Vivaro (C), Peugeot Expert, Citroen Dispatch, Fiat Scudo and Toyota Proace are mechanically the same van, shared platform, cabin and engines, different badges and grilles. They're low, car-like to drive, and come in Compact, Standard (L1) and Long (L2) lengths. Engines are PSA/Stellantis 1.5 and 2.0 BlueHDi diesels, plus the electric -e versions. Toyota adds its warranty; Vauxhall has the biggest UK dealer network.
2. Renault–Nissan family: the Renault Trafic, Nissan Primastar (and the previous-gen Vauxhall Vivaro B and Fiat Talento) share Renault's platform and dCi / Blue dCi diesels. Known for comfy cabins and clever load-through bulkheads.
So "Vivaro vs Trafic vs Expert" is really "which badge and dealer do you want?", pick on price, warranty/dealer network, and the exact spec, because mechanically the within-family twins are near-identical.

Engines
- Stellantis BlueHDi: 1.5 (100/120PS, economical, lighter use) and 2.0 (120/150/180PS, target the 2.0 for loaded or motorway work). EAT8 automatic available and good.
- Renault dCi / Blue dCi: 1.6 twin-turbo on older Trafics, 2.0 Blue dCi on newer, the 2.0 is the stronger, more modern pick.
-
Common problems to check
- Stellantis 1.5/2.0 BlueHDi: check DPF/EGR health (short-trip clogging), AdBlue system on Euro 6, and timing belt service schedule. Generally dependable with servicing.
- Older Renault 1.6 dCi (twin-turbo): can be more involved than the simpler single-turbo, buy on history.
- Both families: clutch/DMF wear at high miles, front-end wear (arms/bushes) on hard-worked urban vans, and the usual DPF warnings on town-only vans.
- Rust: less of an issue than on big older vans, but still check sills/arches on high-mileage examples.
-
What to check
- Full service history, DPF/EGR/AdBlue health, and timing belt record.
- MOT history for recurring advisories.
- Spec match: Compact/Standard/Long length, payload, crew-cab (Doublecab) vs panel, and bulkhead/ply.
- VAT status and HPI/finance check. See buying with your head not your heart.
- Electric (-e) versions: check battery health/range and charging if buying an EV medium van.
-
Running costs & residuals
Medium vans are economical and easy to live with; the Stellantis twins share cheap, plentiful parts across four badges. Vivaro and Trafic have the strongest UK resale of the group thanks to brand familiarity. See the van finance guide if spreading the cost.
-
What should you pay?
Broad guidance, compare live stock across the badges, because the twins often differ in price for the same van:
-
Buying in Southampton & Hampshire
Medium vans are the staple of Hampshire's sole traders and couriers. Browse vans in Southampton and filter to your preferred badge, or compare the model pages and sort by distance.
-
Verdict
In the medium class, buy the van, not the badge, the Stellantis Vivaro/Expert/Dispatch/Scudo/Proace are the same vehicle, so compare all four and buy the best-priced, best-history example; the Renault Trafic/Nissan Primastar are the comfy alternative. Target a 2.0 diesel with full history and healthy DPF/AdBlue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Since 2016, yes, the Vivaro C, Peugeot Expert, Citroen Dispatch, Fiat Scudo and Toyota Proace are the same Stellantis van with different badges. Compare prices across all of them.
A 2.0 diesel (Stellantis 2.0 BlueHDi or Renault 2.0 Blue dCi) for loaded or motorway use; the smaller 1.5/1.6 suits lighter urban work.
DPF/EGR clogging on town-used diesels, AdBlue issues on Euro 6, clutch/DMF wear at high miles, and timing-belt servicing, all manageable with full history.
