Used Pickup Buyer's Guide: Ranger, Hilux, Navara, Amarok

Double-cab pickups do double duty, a 1-tonne workhorse that tows 3.5 tonnes during the week and carries the family at the weekend. The Ford Ranger was the UK's third best-selling LCV in 2025, and the segment is strong used. Here's how to choose between the big four and buy a good one.

  1. The contenders

    • Ford Ranger: the UK's best-selling pickup, car-like to drive, strong engines, huge choice of trims (XL work-spec to Wildtrak and Raptor). The 2023-on new generation shares its platform with the VW Amarok. Engines: 2.0 EcoBlue (single and bi-turbo) and the 3.0 V6 in newer/Raptor models.
    • Toyota Hilux: the durability legend, not the plushest to drive, but built to keep going. 2.4 and 2.8 D-4D diesels; the one to buy if ultimate reliability matters most.
    • Nissan Navara: comfortable and well-equipped, with a 2.3 dCi diesel, but see the chassis note below.
    • VW Amarok: gen-1 had a characterful 3.0 V6; the 2023-on gen-2 is Ranger-based. Premium feel.
    • Also: Isuzu D-Max (tough, work-focused) and the older Mitsubishi L200.
  2. Engines

    • Ford 2.0 EcoBlue: 170/205PS (bi-turbo), the 205 bi-turbo is the strong all-rounder; 3.0 V6 on higher/Raptor trims.
    • Toyota 2.4/2.8 D-4D: the 2.8 is notably stronger; both prize reliability over outright refinement.
    • Nissan 2.3 dCi: single- and twin-turbo.
    • Automatics: most buyers want the auto; all four offer good ones, check service history.
  3. Common problems to check

    • Nissan Navara chassis corrosion: the big one. Certain NP300 Navaras suffered chassis corrosion/cracking near the rear, which led to a recall and goodwill repairs. Inspect the chassis carefully (underneath, around the rear) and check for any recall/repair history before buying a Navara.
    • DPF/EGR (all): pickups used for short runs can clog the DPF, check for warnings and buy one that's done motorway miles.
    • Ford 2.0 EcoBlue: confirm cambelt/service (wet-belt principle as on the vans) and DPF health.
    • Towing wear: many pickups tow heavily, check clutch/DMF, auto gearbox service, and rear axle/driveline on worked examples.
    • Off-road abuse: inspect underbody, diffs and tyres on vehicles used off-road; check for play in steering and suspension.
    • Load-bed & canopy: check the bed liner, tow bar rating and any canopy/hardtop seals.
  4. What to check

    • Full service history and cambelt record (Ford).
    • Navara: chassis inspection + recall history, non-negotiable.
    • MOT history for corrosion/suspension advisories.
    • Towing & payload: confirm the towing capacity and payload suit your use (some high-spec double-cabs have modest payload).
    • VAT & tax: many pickups are commercial for tax but check the latest Benefit-in-Kind rules if it's a company vehicle, and whether the price is plus VAT.
    • HPI/finance check. See buying with your head not your heart.
  5. Running costs & residuals

Pickups hold value well, especially the Hilux (durability) and Ranger (popularity). They're thirstier and pricier to tax/insure than a panel van, but the dual work/family role justifies it for many. Note that company-vehicle tax treatment of double-cab pickups has been changing, so check the current BIK position if buying through a business. See the van finance guide if spreading the cost.

  6. What should you pay?

    Broad guidance, compare live stock:

    • Older Navara/Hilux/Ranger/L200: cheapest entry (Navara, check chassis).
    • 2016–2022 Ranger/Hilux: the value core; huge choice.
    • 2023-on Ranger/Amarok (new gen): priciest, newest, strongest residuals.
    • Raptor / V6 trims: command a premium.

    Compare Ranger, Hilux and Navara.

  7. Buying in Southampton & Hampshire

Farms, trades and leisure buyers around Hampshire and the New Forest keep pickup demand high. Browse vans in Southampton and filter to your pickup, or compare model pages by distance.

  8. Verdict

Pick the Ranger for the best all-round drive and choice, the Hilux for ultimate durability, the Amarok for a premium feel, and if you're looking at a Navara, inspect the chassis and check recall history first. Target a serviced diesel auto with a healthy DPF and honest towing wear.
