Ford Transit vs Transit Custom: Which Should You Buy?
Confused between the Ford Transit and Transit Custom? We explain the size, payload, price and running-cost differences so you buy the right one.
Ford sells two "Transits", and buyers mix them up constantly. The Transit Custom is the mid-size one-tonne van; the Transit (the full-size one) is bigger in every dimension. Picking the wrong one means either paying to move fresh air or running out of space. Here's the straight answer.
The short version
- Transit Custom, mid-size, car-like to drive and park, ~1-tonne payload, the UK's best-selling van. Right for most trades, multi-drop, and anyone who values easy driving.
- Transit (full-size), bigger load volume and payload (up to 3.5t), higher roofs, longer bodies, and the base for Lutons, tippers, dropsides and minibuses. Right for volume, heavy loads and conversions.

Size & payload
The Custom tops out around a 1-tonne payload in L1/L2 lengths with an H1 roof, plenty for ladders, tools and pallets of lighter goods. The full-size Transit goes much further: L2–L4 lengths, H2–H3 roofs, FWD/RWD/AWD, and weight ratings to 3.5t, so it swallows big, bulky or heavy loads the Custom can't.
Rule of thumb: if you load pallets of heavy goods, furniture, or need a Luton/tipper, Transit. If you carry tools and mixed trade loads and drive a lot, Transit Custom.
Driving & parking
The Custom drives like a large car and fits normal parking spaces, a big deal for urban and multi-drop work. The full-size Transit is more van-like and needs more room, especially in the longer/taller bodies.
Running costs
Both use Ford's 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, so economy is similar size-for-size, but the bigger, heavier Transit uses more fuel when worked. Parts and servicing are cheap and everywhere for both. The Custom's huge popularity gives it very strong resale.
Price
The Custom generally costs a little more than an equivalent-age base Transit because demand is so high, but conversions (Luton/tipper) on the full-size Transit carry their own premium for the body and equipment.
Which should you buy?
- Sole trader / tools / multi-drop / urban: Transit Custom.
- Removals / heavy or bulky loads / Luton or tipper / minibus: full-size Transit.
- Not sure? If you can fit your biggest regular load in a Custom and still park easily, buy the Custom, it's cheaper to run and easier to resell. If you're ever squeezed for space or weight, go Transit.
