Buying guide
Used Ford Transit Custom Buyer's Guide
The Ford Transit Custom is the UK's best-selling van (it topped the 2025 light-commercial charts with close to 50,000 registrations) and for good reason. It drives like a big hatchback, the one-tonne payload suits most trades, running costs are sensible and the used market is deep, so there's always choice. This guide covers the generations, the engines to look for, the faults to check and what to pay, so you buy a good one.

Generations: first-gen (2012–2023) vs all-new (2023–)
First generation (2012–2023). The van that redefined the mid-size class. Early vans use the 2.2 TDCi engine; the 2016 facelift switched to the 2.0 EcoBlue engine, added Euro 6, and improved the cabin. A mild-hybrid (mHEV) 2.0 EcoBlue arrived around 2019, plus the plug-in hybrid (PHEV). For most used buyers a post-2016 2.0 EcoBlue is the sweet spot.
Second generation (2023 onward). All-new platform shared with the VW Transporter's successor, a big cabin upgrade, and a full EV option (E-Transit Custom). Still pricey used, but the one to buy if budget allows.
Trims: Leader (basic fleet), Trend, Limited, and the sporty Sport and range-topping specs. L1/L2 denote short/long wheelbase; H1/H2 the roof height. The Double Cab-in-Van (DCIV) adds a second row of seats, and the Tourneo Custom is the passenger/MPV version.

Engines: which to choose
- 2.2 TDCi (pre-2016): 100/125/155PS. Proven but older; the cheapest way in. Check history carefully.
- 2.0 EcoBlue (2016 on): 105/130/170PS, the engines most buyers should target. The 130PS is the practical all-rounder; 170PS for heavy loads or motorway work.
- EcoBlue mHEV: mild-hybrid for slightly better economy around town; mechanically similar to the standard 2.0.
- Automatic: the later 6-speed auto is good; confirm it's been serviced.
-
Common problems to check
The Transit Custom is dependable but has known watch-outs:
- EcoBlue wet (oil-bath) cambelt: the 2.0 EcoBlue uses a belt-in-oil design that needs changing on schedule; a neglected belt can shed debris and cause serious damage. Confirm the cambelt history, this is the single most important check on an EcoBlue.
- DPF/EGR (town-use vans): diesels used only for short urban trips can clog the DPF; look for warning lights and ask about regen history.
- Wet belt oil-pump pickup: related to the above, belt debris blocking the oil pickup is the failure to avoid; full service history is your protection.
- Clutch & DMF: judder on pull-away on higher-mileage vans.
- Rust & wear: check sills, arches, load-area floor and door bottoms; ex-fleet vans can be high-mileage and hard-worked.
- Electrics/infotainment: check the screen, cameras and all electrical kit on the move.
-
What to check on any used Transit Custom
- Full service history and the cambelt record (non-negotiable on EcoBlue).
- MOT history on gov.uk, recurring advisories reveal a hard life.
- Ex-fleet vs owner: many Customs are ex-fleet, not a problem if serviced, but inspect the load area and interior wear. Read our guide on buying with your head, not your heart.
- VAT status: most are sold plus VAT, confirm whether the price is VAT-qualifying.
- Spec match: check wheelbase/roof (L1/L2, H1/H2), payload and whether it's a DCIV crew van.
- Test drive: cold start, smooth clutch, no DPF light, clean pull with no smoke.
-
Running costs & residuals
The Transit Custom's huge popularity means strong resale and cheap, plentiful parts, a practical ownership proposition. The 2.0 EcoBlue returns competitive economy for the class. Commercial road tax (VED) applies to panel-van versions. Insurance is reasonable for the segment; see the van insurance guide, and if spreading the cost, the van finance guide.

What should you pay?
Treat as broad guidance and compare against live stock:
- Pre-2016 2.2 TDCi: cheapest entry; budget for age and miles.
- 2016–2023 2.0 EcoBlue: the value core of the market, most choice, sensible money.
- 2023-on new shape: priciest used, strongest residuals, newest to live with.
Condition, mileage, history, trim and wheelbase move price more than age alone. Compare like-for-like on Transit Customs for sale now.

Verdict
The Transit Custom is the default mid-size van for a reason: easy to drive, cheap to run, strong to resell. Buy a post-2016 2.0 EcoBlue with full history and a documented cambelt change, check the DPF on town-used vans, and you'll have the UK's most sellable van on your side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Generally yes, and it's the UK's best-seller, so parts and specialists are everywhere. The key is a serviced EcoBlue with a documented cambelt change.
The 2.0 EcoBlue (2016 on), with the 130PS as the all-round pick. Earlier 2.2 TDCi vans are cheaper but older.
The wet (oil-bath) cambelt on the 2.0 EcoBlue is the big one, confirm it's been changed. Also DPF/EGR on town-used vans, clutch/DMF wear at higher miles, and the usual rust checks.
These happily exceed 150,000 miles with servicing; a high-mileage van with full history can beat a low-mileage one with gaps.
The Custom is the mid-size one-tonne van most trades need; the full-size Transit is bigger for heavier loads and larger volumes. See the Transit guide.
