Used VW Caddy Buyer's Guide
The VW Caddy is the premium small van, the one to buy when you want car-like driving, a quality cabin and the strongest resale in the class. It costs a little more than a Berlingo or Combo, but you get it back at sale time. This guide covers the Caddy and the longer Caddy Maxi, the engines to target, the faults to check and what to pay.

Generations
- 3rd gen (2004–2015, "2K"): the long-serving Caddy; 1.9/2.0 TDI diesels. Cheapest way in; buy on history.
- 4th gen (2015–2020, facelift of the 2K): improved cabin, EA288 2.0 TDI, Euro 6; the used sweet spot.
- 5th gen (2020 on, MQB platform): all-new, car-like cabin and tech, more efficient 2.0 TDI, the nicest to live with and the one to buy if budget allows.
- Caddy Maxi: the long-wheelbase version, more load length, popular with couriers and as a 5–7 seat people carrier.
-
Engines
- 1.9/2.0 TDI (3rd gen): proven; the 2.0 is the stronger pick.
- 2.0 TDI EA288 (2015 on): 75/102/122PS, the 102 is the sensible all-rounder; refined and economical.
- DSG automatic: excellent but a maintenance item, insist on the DSG oil/service record.
- Petrol (TSI) and the e-Caddy exist but diesel dominates the used market.
-
Common problems to check
- DPF/EGR: the Caddy often lives in town on short trips, the classic DPF-clogging scenario. Check for warning lights and buy one that's done some motorway miles.
- DSG service if automatic; timing belt schedule on the TDI.
- EA288 emissions/AdBlue on Euro 6 vans, check for warnings.
- Clutch/DMF wear at higher mileage; front suspension wear on hard-worked urban vans.
- Generally one of the more robust small vans, history is the main thing.
-
What to check
- Full service history, DPF/belt/DSG/AdBlue records.
- MOT history for recurring advisories.
- Spec: Caddy vs Caddy Maxi length, panel vs Kombi/window van, trim.
- VAT status (often plus VAT) and HPI/finance check. See buying with your head not your heart.
-
Running costs & residuals
The Caddy is cheap to run (small diesel) and holds value better than any rival small van, the premium you pay is partly recovered at resale. Parts and servicing are reasonable for a VW. See our van finance guide if spreading the cost.
-
What should you pay?
Broad guidance, compare against live stock:
- 3rd gen (pre-2015): cheapest entry.
- 2015–2020 EA288: the value core, best choice.
- 2020-on 5th gen: priciest used, nicest, strongest residuals. History, mileage and trim move price most. Compare Caddys and Caddy Maxi.

Buying in Southampton & Hampshire
The Caddy is a favourite with Hampshire's mobile trades and couriers. Browse vans in Southampton and filter to VW Caddy, or use the Caddy listings and sort by distance.

Verdict
If you want the best-driving, best-resale small van and don't mind paying a little more, the Caddy is the pick. Target a serviced 2.0 TDI (EA288) with a healthy DPF and DSG records if auto. For the cheaper alternatives, see our small van buyer's guide.

The 2.0 TDI (EA288 from 2015), with the 102PS as the all-round pick. Insist on DSG service records if it's an automatic.
