Used Ford Ranger Buyer's Guide

The Ford Ranger is the UK's best-selling pickup, it was the country's third best-selling light-commercial vehicle in 2025, and the default do-it-all double-cab: a one-tonne workhorse that tows 3.5 tonnes, works off-road and carries the family. It drives the most car-like of the big pickups and holds value well. Here's how to buy a good one.

  1. Generations

    • T6 (2011–2022): the generation that made the Ranger a UK favourite. Facelifts in 2016 and 2019 improved the cabin, engines and kit. Engines: 2.2 and 3.2 TDCi (five-cylinder 3.2 is the strong, characterful one), then the 2.0 EcoBlue (single and bi-turbo) from the 2019 update.
    • Next-gen (2022 on): all-new, shares its platform with the VW Amarok. Wider track, better cabin and tech, 2.0 EcoBlue and a 3.0 V6 diesel on higher trims and the Raptor. Priciest used, strongest residuals.

Trims: XL and XLT (work spec) up through Limited and Wildtrak (the popular lifestyle trim), to the off-road Raptor. Single, Super (extra) and Double Cab body styles.

  2. Engines

    • 3.2 TDCi (T6): 200PS five-cylinder, torquey and well-liked for towing; thirstier.
    • 2.0 EcoBlue (2019 on): 170PS single-turbo and 213PS bi-turbo, the bi-turbo is the strong all-rounder.
    • 3.0 V6 (next-gen): smooth and powerful on higher trims/Raptor.
    • Automatic (6- and 10-speed): most buyers want the auto, check service history.
  3. Common problems to check

    • 2.0 EcoBlue wet (oil-bath) cambelt: as on Ford's vans, confirm the belt-in-oil has been changed on schedule, the key check on EcoBlue engines.
    • DPF/EGR: pickups used for short runs can clog the DPF, check for warnings and buy one that's done motorway miles.
    • Towing & off-road wear: many Rangers tow and go off-road, check clutch/DMF, auto gearbox service, rear axle/driveline, and underbody/diffs on off-road examples.
    • Tow bar & load bed: check the tow bar rating, bed liner and any canopy/hardtop seals.
    • Infotainment/electrics: check the screen, cameras and 4WD selector work.
  4. What to check

    • Full service history and cambelt record (EcoBlue).
    • MOT history for corrosion/suspension advisories.
    • Towing & payload: confirm the towing capacity and payload suit your use (some high-spec double-cabs have modest payload).
    • Tax: company-vehicle (Benefit-in-Kind) rules for double-cab pickups have been changing, check the current position if buying through a business.
    • VAT status (often plus VAT) and HPI/finance check. See buying with your head not your heart.
  5. Running costs & residuals

The Ranger's popularity gives it strong resale and plentiful parts. It's thirstier and pricier to tax/insure than a panel van, but the dual work/family role earns it. See our van finance guide if spreading the cost.

  6. What should you pay?

Broad guidance, compare against live stock:

    • T6 2.2/3.2 (pre-2019): cheapest entry; the 3.2 Wildtrak is a popular sweet spot.
    • 2019–2022 2.0 EcoBlue: the value core; huge choice.
    • 2022-on next-gen / V6 / Raptor: priciest, newest, strongest residuals. Trim (Wildtrak/Raptor command a premium), mileage and history move price most. Compare Rangers for sale.
  7. Buying in Southampton & Hampshire

Farms, trades and leisure buyers around Hampshire and the New Forest keep Ranger demand high. Browse vans in Southampton and filter to Ford Ranger, or use the Ranger listings and sort by distance. For how it compares to rivals, see our pickup buyer's guide.

  8. Verdict

The Ranger is the all-round pickup to beat: car-like to drive, strong to tow, deep used choice and solid resale. Target a serviced 2.0 EcoBlue (or a 3.2 if you love the five-cylinder), confirm the cambelt and DPF, and check towing/off-road wear.
